Tradition. Purity. Wellness.
Mithila Makhana, also known as fox nuts or lotus seeds, is a wholesome and crunchy superfood, deeply rooted in the cultural and agricultural heritage of Mithilanchal, particularly the Madhubani and Darbhanga districts of Bihar, India.
At Mithila Makhana Udyog, we are proud to carry forward this centuries-old tradition of Makhana cultivation. With origins tracing back to the 18th century, under the reign of King Darbhanga, Makhana farming began in Madhubani using indigenous, sustainable methods passed down through generations. Back then, it was more than just a crop—it was a symbol of livelihood and community resilience.
Our Story Begins in Madhubani
A region known for both its art and agriculture, Madhubani was the birthplace of traditional Makhana farming. It started with the hard work of local, often poor, farmers who cultivated Makhana in natural ponds and wetlands. Over time, its fame and nutritional value spread across the country. Today, Mithila Makhana is proudly recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, making it a symbol of authentic quality.
Makhana in Culture & Rituals
Makhana holds a sacred place in Indian traditions. It is one of the five essential components of Panch Meva—a revered mix of dry fruits used in Hindu religious ceremonies. Representing the Panch Tatva—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space—Makhana has been part of spiritual offerings and fasting rituals for centuries, not just for its sanctity but also for its high nutritional value and energy-boosting properties.
